Natural Skincare: Coffee & Bananas

Being beautiful doesn’t mean having to spend lots of money at a crowded store. You can find manypampering products right in the convenience of your own kitchen. Here, I will let you in on my favorite two products for a homemade makeover: coffee and bananas.

Coffee
This well-known bean is touted by some for its great topical cellulite reducing properties. Make a simple at-home exfoliant by mixing used coffee grounds with a little shower gel. When in the bath or shower, work the mixture all over your body using firm, circular motions. Be sure to pay special attention to elbows, thighs, knees and ankles. Rinse well and moisturize after blotting dry.

Bananas
As a super fruit, bananas have high potassium content and plenty of antioxidants and minerals like vitamins A, B, C, folate and magnesium. The banana’s versatile nature leads it to be a great treatment for both hair and skin.

For a quick mask that will leave your hair silky and shiny and your face hydrated and soft, simply place one banana in a food processor with a couple of tablespoons of olive oil (this is a great way to use up bananas that are turning brown). Blend until the consistency is smooth and creamy. Apply a thick layer to face and/or hair. Leave on for 15 minutes, rinse with cold water, and wash face and hair as normal.

Almost any fruit or root vegetable applied to the face will give you some benefit – pumpkins, squash, papaya, strawberries, tea bags, yogurt, honey. For more at-home skin care ideas, visit our previous post about six organic ingredients commonly found in kitchens.

Have fun experimenting!
