Hyperpigmentation & Age Spots: What They Are & How To Cure Them

I have done extensive research and lectures on Hyperpigmentation and when it comes right down to it, sun spots, age spots and pregnancy mask are just different names for those annoying brown patches that appear the surface of the skin. While these brown patches may differ in appearance from person to person, the root cause is the same.

What causes the spots?
In simple terms; within the skin, hair and eyes there are cells called the Melonocytes; these cells produce pigment called melanin, giving the skin color. When excess pigment is produced, deposits of melanin occur and Hyperpigmentation forms.

Excess Melanin production can be triggered by several things –

  • Sun exposure
  • Hormone fluctuation – especially during pregnancy or menopause
  • Genetic predisposition – darker skin types tend to struggle with more serious, hard to treat pigmentation
  • Trauma to the skin’s surface – acne, shaving, ingrown hairs or cuts and scrapes

When treated correctly, Hyperpigmentation can be lightened and often eliminated. The trick is to look for products that “inhibit” melanin production and gently fade pigmentation. Look for skin care products which contain the following ingredients:

  • Hydroquinone – Two products that I recommend are, Skinceuticals Phloretin CF Gel and Credentials Skin Brightening Gel. Note: when using products containing Hydroquinone, if skin irritation occurs discontinue use or use less often.
  • Kojic Acid – SkinCeuticals Phyto+ (one of my personal favorites) a natural alternative to Hydroquinone.
  • Azelaic Acid
  • Licorice Extract
  • Arbutin
  • Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C)
  • Lactic Acid

When using skin care products with any of the ingredients listed above, it is imperative that you also apply SPF daily to protect the skin and discourage further pigmentation from forming in the future.

I recently ordered the SkinCeutical Pigment Regualtor for Beauty At Skin Deep. It works wonders. The dark spots on my face have started to fade and look much better than before I started to use the product. Thanks Beauty At Skin Deep.
