At-Home Facial Peels For Younger Looking Skin

Most of us are looking for younger, healthier, more vibrant skin. Many of us don’t have the money to drop on expensive cosmetic procedures and would like to explore organic skin care.

Facial peels have long been used to achieve a smoother, more youthful skin.

They involve applying a concentrated acid to the skin to dissolve the top layers of dead skin cells.

Unfortunately, peels can be pricey, anywhere from $75 to $2,000 depending on what you’re having done and where you’re doing it. Despite the sometimes exorbitant cost, facial peels are effective in reducing fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, even sun damage and age spots.

Most peels use alpha or beta hydroxy acids, typically glycolic acid, which can irritate the skin. Especially for those with sensitive skin, you might do better with an alternative.

Here are two natural facial peels you can try at home, all by yourself, before shelling out the big bucks. Both of these remedies are gentler alternatives; the top layers of dead skin cells are removed revealing smoother, younger, healthier skin and the skin is simultaneously soothed and nourished.

Cucumber Facial Peel

(Cucumber is an astringent that tightens the skin, while chamomile, green tea and aloe vera soothe, nourish and reduce puffiness.)

You’ll need the following to get started:

  • 1 cucumber, peeled & seeded
  • 2 oz steeped chamomile tea
  • 2 oz steeped green tea
  • 1 package unflavored gelatin
  • 1 oz aloe vera gel
  1. Puree the cucumber until it resembles a paste.
  2. Strain it, reserving the juice.
  3. Combine the chamomile tea, green tea and gelatin in a small saucepan, stirring over low heat until the gelatin dissolves.
  4. Remove from heat and transfer to a small glass bowl.
  5. Add cucumber juice and aloe vera gel to the glass bowl; mix well.
  6. Refrigerate for about 25 minutes. The mixture will begin to thicken.
  7. Spread mixture over face and neck, leaving on to dry for approximately 20 minutes.
  8. Peel mask off and rinse with warm water.

Papaya Facial Peel

(The enzyme papain in papaya is a powerful exfoliant, but papaya also soothes and nourishes the skin.)

You’ll need:

  • 1 papaya, peeled & seeded
  • 3 tbsp honey
  • 1 pineapple, peeled and cored
  1. Blend pineapple in mixer or food processor. Put 1 C of puree in a bowl
  2. Blend papaya with mixer or food processor. Strain and add 1 C of puree to bowl.
  3. Add honey and mix
  4. Refrigerate for approximately 20 minutes, until mixture thickens.
  5. Spread mixture over face and neck, leaving on for about 15 minutes.
  6. Rinse using warm water.
