6 Organic Skin Care Ingredients in Your Kitchen

1. Olive Oil – In addition to being a natural, hypoallergenic way to moisturize skin, extra virgin olive oil has the added advantage of providing strong antioxidants. Vitamins A and E help repair and renew skin that has been damaged and stimulate cells to return skin to a firmer, smoother, and healthier state. There are numerous uses for olive oil, so many that it has its own post – “The Many Uses of Oilve Oil in Skin Care”.

2. Oatmeal – The FDA cites it as effective for relieving dryness and inflammation, including insect stings, rashes, and eczema. That’s why finely powdered oatmeal (“colloidal”) is sifted into soothing body soaks, moisturizers, and soaps. Oatmeal will remove the dryness and irritation and soothe the skin by leaving a fine protective film.

3. Avocado –Great for sun damage, age spots and scars. Avocado will help moisturize and build collagen in the skin. For this reason, it is often recommended for those with dry and mature skin.

4. Papaya – A wonderful exfoliator that gently removes dead skin cells to reveal smoother, newer skin beneath. Papain, the main enzyme in papaya, dissolves the dead skin cells and works as an antibacterial to fight infection and breakouts.

5. Cucumber – Made up mostly of water, it also contains some Vitamin C and Caffeic Acid that help to soothe irritations and reduce swelling. The cucumber juice is a source of silica that works to improve the connective tissue in the skin and naturally hydrate it.

Cucumber is also great at restoring your overall pH towards better alkalinity.

6. Strawberries – These berries gently refresh, brighten and exfoliate the skin, remove impurities, and reduce redness and swelling. Strawberries make a wonderful cleansing and skin softening facial mask. The antioxidants in the fruit help to repair skin damage and counteract aging by assisting the cells in regeneration and repairs.

Considerations when making beauty applications:

  • When mixing food items, use sterile utensils and containers
  • Wash hands and ingredients thoroughly so you do not contaminate your skin
  • Organic ingredients are recommended to avoid applying pesticides to delicate skin
  • Apply a small amount of the prepared mask to the inside of your wrist before applying to your entire face. This will ensure that your skin does not have a bad reaction. If your skin begins to feel irritated or burning, remove mask immediately
  • First prepare the skin by applying a warm wet cloth to your face. This will open the pores for maximum absorption. Wash the mask off with warm water and rinse with cool water (to close pores).
